While on the Unbreakable tour, McLean impressed Backstreet fans with songs including London and Drive By Love.

Around the same time as A.J., Howie Dorough began work on his first solo album. His new material was first performed on the Backstreet Boys’ Unbreakable tour earlier this year, wowing fans with a song called She’s Like the Sun. Last year he recorded a duet with Philippine’s singer Sarah Geronimo.

Plans for Christmas

Whether on tour or planning the next album, A.J. McLean says as much as the boys are like their own family, they also like to enjoy a bit of space. “We live in each other’s pockets a lot of the time so it’s nice to get some space and perspective sometimes too,” he says.

“We live in the US, but not close enough to pop over for dinner every night. We work so hard when we’re touring to make sure we deliver the best show we possibly can for our fans and it can be so exhausting. I think we are all looking forward to Christmas and having a break.

“We will all be with our friends and families and it gives you a chance to catch up.”

We're busy, busy boys," says Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean mid yawn.



"Sometimes I'm not sure what time of day it is because we're here, there and everywhere."



Over nearly 18 years of crazy highs and even crazier lows, the five that then became four have conquered both the album and singles charts, stepped out alone pursuing various solo careers and battled things out in courts. Having seen it all and come through the other side in almost one piece, McLean tells tabloid! there is no better feeling than the way the boys feel today.



"We were so naïve," he says ahead of their first concert in the Middle East tonight at The Palladium, Dubai.




"The good, the bad and the ugly have hit us hard over the years, but everything happens for a reason. We are a lot more careful now than we've ever been before. More protective, I think. As a group you mould yourself that way."



A new album, This Is Us, hit the shelves just a month ago, giving McLean the chance to chat about life on tour, what to expect and who the nose-pickers of the band are.



He takes us on a journey through the band's history through their albums.



Backstreet Boys (1992-'96)



The brainchild of boyband producer Lou Pearlman, the Backstreet Boys were manufactured from day one with auditions held in the US to be a part of a new "clean-cut" boy band.



"It all seems such a long time ago but it's also great to look back. We've come so far."



Backstreet's Back (1996-'97)



Having discovered Pearlman was taking a huge cut of their money, leaving the boys with just enough to survive, the group filed a lawsuit against him. They won the courtroom battle after many years.




Millennium (1997-'99)



Most of the Backstreet Boys' better known songs are on this album, including I Want It That Way, Larger Than Life and Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely.

Never Gone (2005-'06)



"A while since the last album, this was just to remind people we never went away."



Unbreakable (2007-'08)



After the 2005-2006 tour, Kevin Richardson left the group to start a family. The four remaining members have always refused to rule out a possible return for the singer. "You never know what the future could hold. Watch this space..."



About this album, McLean says: "I think when Kevin left, a lot of people — including the critics — thought that would be the end. They expected us to fall apart and disappear as if we never existed, and this album was our way of showing we never went away."




This Is Us (2009)




"The venue in Dubai is a bit smaller so we're bringing out the B-show rather than the A-show. But it's still our A-show, if you know what I mean," says McLean.

"I mean it's not our A-show — with all the cast and crew of dancers, because the venue isn't big enough. But we'll definitely give our A-show with regards to the performance, because we always do. Mitte der 90er Jahre brach in Deutschland ein wahrer Boygroup-Boom aus. Auch hierzulande traten eine Reihe Gruppen hervor, die jedoch allesamt in der Grotte verschwanden. Die Backstreet Boys sind die einzigen Überlebenden aus dieser Zeit, aber sie wissen: "So was wie uns wird es nicht mehr geben". Zwei Mitglieder der Backstreet Boys, Brian und A.J., erklären das Phänomen der Boygroups, das eigentlich gar keins ist.



In der Jako-Arena in Bamberg gaben die Backstreet Boys (BSB) im Rahmen ihrer Welttournee ihr letztes Deutschland-Konzert. Ähnlich wie zu den damaligen Glanzzeiten der Amerikaner, tummelten sich weibliche Fans mit Isomatten und Decken bepackt vor den Eingangstoren und warteten in der Kälte auf den Einlass. Es waren jene Fans, die früher wie heute ganz vorne in der ersten Reihe stehen, mitsingen und ihren Idolen aus der Jugend zujubeln wollen. Vor gut zehn Jahren mussten sich die jungen Frauen noch von ihren Müttern zu den Shows chauffieren lassen. Heute ist das anders. Die meisten BSB-Anhänger sind mittlerweile selbst im Besitz eines Führerscheins. Und statt der besten Freundin, muss nun der Freund mit auf's Boygroup-Konzert.

Auch bei den Backstreet Boys, die mit über weltweit 75 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern nach wie vor die erfolgreichste Boygroup darstellen, hat sich in deren beruflicher Laufbahn einiges verändert. 2006 verließ Kevin Richardson (36) die Band aus privaten Gründen. Das einstige Teenie-Quintett aus den 90er-Jahren Brian Littrell (34), A.J. McLean (31), Howie Dorough (36) und Nick Carter (29) bestreiten nun zu viert die Show. Privat sind Howie und Brian jeweils beide verheiratet, haben Kinder. Nick und A.J. sind solo.

Die Hoch und Tiefs im Musikbusiness haben die Jungs in ihrer mittlerweile 16-jährigen Bandkarriere durchlebt und die Schattenseiten des Ruhms am eigenen Leib erfahren. Aber sie sind immer noch hier. Sie haben die Boygroup-Mania aus den 90ern überstanden und Bands wie Caught in the Act, N'Sync, East 17, Worlds Apart und Bed and Breakfast hinter sich gelassen. Noch im selben Jahr gab die britische Band Take That ihre Trennung bekannt. Pearlman's Plan ging auf - und die Nachfolger für Take That waren gefunden. Dass die Backstreet Boys weniger musikalisch wären, hält A.J für absurd: "Wir können auch Instrumente spielen, aber das ist nicht unser Schwerpunkt. Wir sehen uns als Entertainer und Performer. BUNTE Online: Ihr seid die erfolgreichste Boyband der Welt. 1993 begann Eure Erfolgsgeschichte, die bis heute andauert. Fühlt Ihr Euch nicht manchmal wie ein altes Ehepaar, das gemeinsam die Jahrzehnte durchlebt?

Nick Carter: Im Grunde genommen ja, aber wir lernen jeden Tag etwas Neues über jeden von uns. Und das ist das Schöne dabei. Wir haben das große Glück, eine Familie außerhalb und innerhalb der Band zu haben. Wir sind fünf Brüder. Kevin ist immer noch unser Bruder, auch wenn er nicht mehr in der Band ist. Wir sind eine eingeschworene Gang. Wir haben einen Eid geleistet, von dem sich keiner mehr befreien kann oder will.

AJ: (lacht) Genau! Wenn einer flüchten will, werden wir ihn jagen und um die Ecke bringen!

Brüder für die Ewigkeit klingt ja toll, aber geht ihr Euch nicht manchmal gehörig auf die Nerven?

AJ: Wir kennen die Knöpfe der anderen, die wir drücken müssen, um uns auf die Nerven zu gehen und kennen auch die Knöpfe, die wir drücken müssen, um uns zum Lachen zu bringen. Jeder von uns ist seit so langer Zeit ein Bestandteil im Leben des anderen, dass wir die hellsten und dunkelsten Kapitel jedes einzelnen kennen.

Nick Carter: Ich würde mich für jeden der Jungs in der Band vor eine Gewehrkugel werfen, weil ich weiß, dass jeder von ihnen das gleiche auch für mich machen würde. Es ist eine Kameradschaft entstanden, die sich nur schwer erklären lässt.

Einige verheiratet, andere noch Single

Wenn Ihr euch die letzten 16 Jahre anschaut, wie hat sich Euer persönliches Leben und Euer Dasein als Musiker verändert?

AJ: Einige von uns sind jetzt verheiratet und haben Kinder, das ändert natürlich alles, weil sich die Gewichtung von Werten verschiebt. Die Band ist auf einmal nicht mehr das einzige im Leben, das dir Erfüllung bringt. Für diejenigen von uns, die noch Single sind, ist die Band alles, was wir haben. Howie, Brian und auch Kevin sehen die Dinge jetzt anders.

Oft kopiert, doch nie erreicht. Mit über 100 Millionen verkauften Tonträgern seid ihr offiziell die erfolgreichste Boyband der Welt. Was ist Euer Geheimnis, dass ihr auch nach so langer Zeit immer noch top seid?

Nick Carter: Sag nie nein, akzeptiere keine Niederlage und gib niemals auf. Wir haben uns immer neue und höhere Ziele gesetzt, haben mit Freude in die Zukunft geschaut, ohne Fehler aus der Vergangenheit zu wiederholen. Viele Bands leben nur noch in den Erfolgen der Vergangenheit, das haben wir nie getan.

Nick, seit Neuestem kann man Dein Leben auch bei Twitter verfolgen. Wieso das? Ich würden denken, dass jemand, der so häufig in der Öffentlichkeit steht, keine Lust hat, auch noch sein Privatleben öffentlich zu machen ...

Nick Carter: Hmm ... vielleicht hast Du recht, aber ich mag es einfach, weil ich gerne schreibe und alles Mögliche dort posten kann, einfache Gedanken oder selbstverfasste Gedichte. Ich nutze Twitter eher als Blog.

AJ: Nick hat sich mit Twitter ganz schön in die Nesseln gesetzt. Er wollte eine E-Mail mit allen möglichen Daten wie Adresse, Telefonnummer, Handynummer weiterleiten, doch leider landeten all diese Infos auf Twitter. Innerhalb einer Minute riefen wie wild Mädchen aus der ganzen Welt auf seinem Handy an, das war echt krass.

Liebes-Tattoos, oder lieber doch nicht?

Nick, Du hast einmal gesagt, es ist für jemanden, der ständig im Rampenlicht steht, sehr schwierig, die wahre Liebe zu finden, weil man nie weiß, ob man wirklich als Mensch auch abseits der Berühmheit geliebt wird. Hat Dir der Ruhm bei der Suche nach der großen Liebe also eher geschadet?

Nick Carter: Es hat seine guten und seine schlechten Seiten, berühmt zu sein. Die Kunst ist, Privates und Persönliches auszubalancieren. Mit der Zeit habe ich gelernt, Menschen und ihre Absichten immer besser zu lesen.

Das Tattoo von Deiner Ex Paris Hilton hast Du inzwischen mit einem Totenkopf übermalt. Würdest Du Dir je wieder für ein Mädchen ein Tattoo stechen lassen?

Nick Carter: Klar würde ich das wieder machen. Wenn eine Beziehung zu Ende geht, bleibt eben eine Narbe, und das oft in doppelter Hinsicht.

AJ: Ich hab mir auch mal ein Tattoo mit dem Namen einer großen Liebe stechen lassen, doch das würde ich nie wieder machen. Der einzige Name, den ich mir je tätowieren lassen würde, ist der Name meiner Kinder und den meiner Mutter. Und dabei hat sich das Mädchen damals gar nicht über das Tattoo gefreut und meinte nur: Warum in aller Welt hast Du das denn getan? Da habe ich mit ihr Schluss gemacht.

Abgesehen vom Stress mit Liebesbeziehungen hat jeder von Euch schon richtige harte Zeiten durchlitten. AJ, Du hast Deine Drogen- und Alkoholprobleme überwunden. Wie bist Du da rausgekommen?

AJ: Die Band und meine Familie haben mir geholfen, und ich habe dabei eines realisiert: Ich bin nicht perfekt und gebe auch nicht vor, perfekt zu sein. Ich weiß, dass wir oft als Vorbilder angesehen werden, und da wiegt natürlich jeder Fehltritt gleich doppelt schwer. Aber wichtig sind am Ende nicht die Fehler, sondern die Art, wie man damit umgeht.

Nick Carter: Never say no, do not accept defeat and never give it up. We have always set new and higher goals, have looked with joy in the future, without repeating mistakes of the past. Many artists live only in the successes of the past, we've never done.

Nick, lately, you can follow your life now on Twitter. Why? I would think that someone who is so often the public has no desire to make public even his private life ...

Nick Carter: Hmm ... maybe you're right, but I like it simply because I like to write and everything else can post there, simple thoughts or selbstverfasste poems. I've been using Twitter more as a blog.

AJ: Nick has set itself with Twitter pretty hard on the nettles. The last, best chance: UN climate conference opens

COPENHAGEN — The largest and most important U.N. climate change conference in history opened Monday, with organizers warning diplomats from 192 nations that this could be the last, best chance for a deal to protect the world from calamitous global warming.

Negotiations have dragged on for two years and only recently have shown signs of breakthroughs with new commitments from major emitters such as the United States, China and India to control greenhouse gas emissions.

In a signal the Obama administration is prepared to act without congressional action if needed, officials said the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has concluded that greenhouse gases are endangering Americans' health and must be regulated.

The two-week conference convened in an upbeat mood after a series of promises by rich and emerging economies to curb their greenhouse gases. Still, major issues have yet to be resolved.

At stake is a deal that aims to wean the world away from fossil fuels and other pollutants to greener sources of energy, and to transfer hundreds of billions of dollars from rich to poor countries every year over decades to help them adapt to climate change.

Scientists say without such an agreement, the Earth will face the consequences of ever-rising temperatures, leading to the extinction of plant and animal species, the flooding of coastal cities, more extreme weather events, drought and the spread of diseases.

With the commitments remaining short of scientists' demands, the pressure was on those major emitters for bigger cuts. Swedish Environment Minister Anders Carlgren, speaking for the European Union, said it would be "astonishing" if President Barack Obama came for the final negotiation session "to deliver just what was announced in last week's press release."

U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson was expected to announce the endangerment finding later Monday, officials told The Associated Press, speaking privately because the announcement had not been made.

American business groups have strongly argued against tackling global warming through the Clean Air Act, saying it is less flexible and more costly than the bill being considered before Congress. On Monday, some of those groups questioned the timing of the EPA announcement, calling it political.

Climate activists in Copenhagen said the decision could help the Obama administration move ahead on climate policy without waiting for action from Congress.

"The question is will they use it that way, or are they using it as a bargaining chip to threaten action, and get Congress to act instead," said Damon Moglen, of Greenpeace USA.

Conference president Connie Hedegaard said the key to an agreement is finding a way to raise and channel public and private financing to poor countries for years to come to help them fight the effects of climate change.

Hedegaard - Denmark's former climate minister - said if governments miss their chance at the Copenhagen summit, a better opportunity may never come.

"This is our chance. If we miss it, it could take years before we got a new and better one. If we ever do," she said.

The conference opened with video clips of children from around the globe urging delegates to help them grow up without facing catastrophic warming. On the sidelines, climate activists competed for attention to their campaigns on deforestation, clean energy and low-carbon growth.

Mohamad Shinaz, an activist from the Maldives, plunged feet-first into a tank with nearly 200 gallons (750 liters) of frigid water to illustrate what rising sea levels were doing to his island nation.

"I want people to know that this is happening," Shinaz said as the water reached up to his chest. "We have to stop global warming."

Leah Wickham, a 24-year-old from Fiji, broke down in tears as she handed a petition from 10 million people asking the negotiators at Copenhagen to come up with a deal to save islands like hers.

"I'm on the front lines of climate change," she said.

Denmark's prime minister said 110 heads of state and government will attend the final days of the conference. Obama's decision to attend the end of the conference, not the middle, was taken as a signal that an agreement was getting closer.

"The evidence is now overwhelming" that the world needs early action to combat global warming, said Rajendra Pachauri, the head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an U.N. expert panel.

He defended climate research in the face of a controversy over e-mails pilfered from a British university, which global warming skeptics say show scientists have been conspiring to hide evidence that doesn't fit their theories.

"The recent incident of stealing the e-mails of scientists at the University of East Anglia shows that some would go to the extent of carrying out illegal acts perhaps in an attempt to discredit the IPCC," he told the conference.

The first week of the conference will focus on refining the complex text of a draft treaty. But major decisions will await the arrival next week of environment ministers and the heads of state in the final days of the conference, which ends Dec. 18.

"The time for formal statements is over. The time for restating well-known positions is past," said the U.N.'s top climate official, Yvo de Boer. "Copenhagen will only be a success it delivers significant and immediate action."

Among those decisions is a proposed fund of $10 billion each year for the next three years to help poor countries create climate change strategies. After that, hundreds of billions of dollars will be needed every year to set the world on a new energy path and adapt to new climates.

"The deal that we invite leaders to sign up on will be one that affects all aspects of society, just as the changing climate does," said Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen. "Negotiators cannot do this alone, nor can politicians. The ultimate responsibility rests with the citizens of the world, who will ultimately bear the fatal consequences if we fail to act."

A study released by the U.N. Environment Program on Sunday indicated that pledges by industrial countries and major emerging nations fall just short of the reductions of greenhouse gas emissions that scientists have said are needed to keep average temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 F) by the end of the century.

In Vienna, another senior U.N. official warned that the fight against climate change must not "cannibalize" development financing.

Kandeh Yumkella, director-general of the U.N Industrial Development Organization, said poor countries need "fresh money" to combat global warming, not funds diverted from efforts to improve maternal health or fight world hunger.

Moscú, 3 dic (EFE).- Los Backstreet Boys, uno de los principales exponentes del "fenómeno fan" de los años 90 del siglo pasado, han pedido comida rápida, chicles de varios sabores y cigarrillos de naranja para sus dos conciertos en Rusia, informaron hoy los organizadores de su gira en este país.

En su lista de exigencias, los integrantes del grupo estadounidense, Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, A. J. McLean y Howie Dorough, subrayan la necesidad indispensable de contar con cuatro camerinos individuales con espejo de cuerpo entero incluido, así como un cuarto de baño para cada uno.

The boys are back – again

Remember the Backstreet Boys? The baggy trousers, the Kangol hats and those upbeat pop anthems that reverberated throughout the 1990s: I Want It That Way, As Long As You Love Me and Everybody (Backstreet’s Back), among myriad other lyrical gems.

..

Well, steady yourselves, people, because Backstreet’s back, part two. The quintet is down to a quartet (Kevin Richardson, the oldest member, left on friendly terms in 2006), but the boys are surging through the European leg of their new tour like a musical Hadrian’s army and before arriving for their first-ever Middle East gig in Dubai on December 17.

The tour is called This Is Us, appropriately named after their latest and seventh studio album, which was released last month. You will no doubt have heard the catchy first single, Straight Through My Heart, on radios across the land.

“We made it a point to go back to our roots,” explains AJ McLean (he’s the one with the goatee). “We were kind of adamant about making a lot of up-tempo tracks so we could bring it to our live shows. We’re dancing 85 per cent of it.”

Last week, the boys played two of these high-energy gigs in ­London and appeared on The X-Factor ­after-show, The Xtra Factor, where the controversial contestants John and Edward Grimes, or “Jedward”, said that the Backstreet Boys were their ­inspiration when they were growing up. “They may not be the best vocalists in the world,” McLean says, “but they’re having a lot of fun.”

McLean, 31, is familiar with ­matters of meteoric success. The Backstreet Boys formed 16 years ago and subsequently notched up sales of more than 100 million albums worldwide. They signed multimillion-dollar record deals, were besieged by hysterical teenage girls in cities across the world and littered their path with number-one hits.

But at the same time, the boys grew up. Brian Littrell (the blonde who isn’t Nick Carter) got married and had a baby, Howie ­Dorough followed suit, and Richardson left to pursue “the next chapter” of his life. The band’s next two albums, Never Gone (2005) and Unbreakable (2007), didn’t reach the dizzy levels of success that previous efforts did, and there were struggles with their record label, Jive. All that glittered was definitely not gold.

“We actually never stopped, though,” McLean says of the hiatus. “All that stuff about how we broke up, that was never the case.”

But 16 years on, is the name Backstreet Boys still appropriate? “It’s funny,” McLean says. “Look at ­other groups – The Beach Boys, the Pet Shop Boys, the Beastie Boys, they’re all still boys. It’s a brand. It will ­never change.”

So why the push now, with the worldwide tour and the new album? “We just love making music and it felt the right time to make a new record,” McLean says.

A good number of the fans, he adds, are grown up but still coming to gigs and bringing new faces with them. “Lots of them are married now and they’re bringing their sons and daughters with them. It’s starting a whole new fan base.”

The Backstreet Boys are in good company on this eternal boy-band merry-go-round. Take That’s summer tour this year was the fastest-selling tour ever in the UK. Westlife are toiling over a new album and there are whispers that ’N Sync (­Justin Timberlake’s old band) might pull it back together. Does that worry the Backstreet Boys?

“We’re all friends,” McLean says wearily. “Obviously the press always want to make out a fight, but it’s not even close to that. We’ve all been friends for years.”

The recent death of Boyzone’s Stephen Gately was “definitely a shock”, he adds. “Hearing things like this about peers of mine, it really changes things. I don’t want to wind up dead in my hotel room.” Having previously spent time in rehab for drugs and alcohol, McLean is back on good behaviour, but calls it “a daily struggle”.

There’s plenty for him to focus on, though. In addition to the ­current tour, McLean is working on his solo career and releasing a ­debut ­album next year. He has a girlfriend, though admits to harbouring a “huge” crush on Lady Gaga. “I’m dying to meet her and do a song together,” he laughs.

And 20 to 30 years from now, will the boys still be churning out music? “Absolutely,” he says. “We might not be dancing as much. We might need our walkers on stage, but we’re doing this as long as our fans want us to and as long as we’re having fun. That’s the biggest thing.”

Neben den alten Songs präsentierten sie vor allem die Lieder ihres neuen Albums „This Is Us“ – darunter die Single-Auskopplung „Straight Through My Heart“.

Seit 16 Jahren stehen Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, Howie Dorough und Nick Carter gemeinsam auf der Bühne. Nach dem Ausstieg des ältesten Backstreet Boys Kevin Richardson im Jahr 2006 gibt es nur noch vier Bandmitglieder.

Mit seichter Popmusik auf ihrer neuen CD wollen die Amerikaner zurück zu ihren Wurzeln. „Wir haben erkannt, wer wir sind und was wir am besten können“, sagte Carter, der jüngste Backstreet Boy. „Es ist das beste Album, das wir seit Jahren aufgenommen haben.“

Für die nächsten Tage sind noch Konzerte in München (18.11.), Frankfurt/Main (22.11.), Berlin (23.11.) und Bamberg (29.11.) geplant.

Beside old songs they've present their new songs from their new album 'This is us' - including the single 'STMH'

Since 16 years Brian, AJ, Howie and Nick are together on stage. After the exit of the oldes BSB Kevin R. in 2006 they're only 4 band members.

With emotionally pop songs on their new album the Americans want to go back to their roots. 'We've realized who we are and what we can do best' sais Nick Carter - the youngest member. 'It's the best album we've recorded over the last years'

For the next couple of days they'll be on stage in Munich (18 Nov), Frankfurt/Main (22 Nov), Berlin (23 Nov) and Bamberg (29 Nov).
