THE BACKSTREETBOYS: This Is Us - Review

Image and video hosting by TinyPic
This Is Us At A Glance:
FABTASTIC!:
Straight Through My Heart, Bye Bye Love, All Of Your Life (You Need Love), Masquerade, Helpless
Great: Bigger, If I Knew Then, This Is Us, PDA, She's A Dream, Shattered,
OK: Undone
Below Average:
What Were They Thinking?:

The Backstreet Boys are back with a brand new record, and it's rather brilliant! It's similar to recent material from New Kids On The Block and Darin - A very modern dance/pop/r'n'b hybrid and the new record, titled "This Is Us" is a rather great listen! I think if you stuck the best bits of Darin/NKOTB and this album on one disc from one artist, it'd be unbeatable, but I'm going off on a tangent here - So on with the review!

The disc kicks off with the modern pop/dance sound that's all the rage about now which signifies the start of the lead single Straight Through My Heart. The track is an intense one that juggles the amazing synths with great vocals from the boys and some great lyrics and a killer chorus - All in all? A pretty impressive single that really showcases the album's sound fantastically!. So fantastic! Next up, the softer piece, and uptempo dance/ballad number (well, kinda) - Bigger. The guys sound brilliant, and the lyrics are fantastic here too. There's a beautiful delicateness that the track has - It's catchy, but it does feel like it's missing something that Straight Through My Heart has in spades. Either way, a decent enough track that I really quite like. Bye Bye Love, sounding very Chris-Brown-Forever-ish, is a rather brilliant one! The Forever beat that I mentioned a minute ago is brilliant, and the guys still sound fantastic - Pair it with a hooky, fun chorus like you've got here and you've got a hit on your hands! A really catchy piece that I quite like! Next up, one my favourite (if not my overall favourite) tracks on the album All Of Your Life (You Need Love). As always on the album, the guys sound fantastic and the lyrics are great - but here they are layered over a really sunny, hands-in-the-air, europop infused version of their sound and it works absolutely brilliantly! A killer dance piece that just has to be released as a single - A great piece!

If I Knew Then, the album's first real "r'n'b" piece is an interesting one. It's more than listenable, with the guys in fine form with a more than catchy vibe - but something about it does rub me the wrong way, which is a bit of a shame. Not my favourite on the disc, but still decent enough. This Is Us, another of the album's r'n'b/ballad tracks, is (very much like the last track) a decent enough track that's more than listenable with flashes of brilliance - like the chorus here - but something about the rest of the track just doesn't quite sit right - Either way, a nice enough track, but not my favourite. PDA, with a real Eminem opening vibe, takes things back in an electro/pop/dance direction - and it's all the better for it! The lyrics are fun, the guys sound great but the really brilliant moment here is the completely synthtastic chorus - Absolutely brilliant! Would I have picked it as the lead (like Wiki suggests it was going to be)? No. But do I like it? Definitely! The retro touches are nice too! The verses of Masquerade are pure brilliance! Deep, dark, energetic, intense and very Black-Eyed-Peas with the guys sounding totally brilliant! I'm slightly less keen on the chorus, it's a little high-pitched compared to the rest of the song, but still - How can you parse amazing verses like this up - If only the verses of this were thrown with the chorus of PDA - I'd be in pure musical heaven! - Can somebody please arrange that? Great! Thanks. A killer track!

Things slow down on She's A Dream, with a real r'n'b ballad vibe taking over. I love the tribal influences here, the chants are great - but I'm not so sold on the track. The lyrics and vocals are all fine enough, but something about the track does rub me the wrong way. It's a decent enough piece though! Shattered, another of the album's "ballads", is possibly my favourite track of the sort on the disc. The guys sound great, the lyrics are fantastic and the track has a great pop/r'n'b hybrid. The piano here is quite nice and the track just comes together quite nicely - I really do like the chorus - Almost epic. Undone, the album's "closer" is another of the album's ballads - And it's another great one! The guys sound brilliant, the lyrics are nice - but something about the song is quite different - and I really like it. The opening effect is brilliant, and the song has a "freshness" about it that I really like it. I'm not sold on the chorus - but I like the rest! Last on my disc, billed by Wiki as a European bonus track, is Helpless - featuring Pitbull. A darker dance/pop/r'n'b piece somewhere between PDA and Straight Through My Heart - It's intense, gloriously dancey and boasts a killer vocal from the guys. The verses are fantastic, and the chorus is just so synthy - Though I just really, really want to change of the lines - It just could be so much better! Pitbull's rap is entirely unobjectionable and I'm just amazed that this didn't make the album's final cut - Why? - All in all, A great album!

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: 'Straight Through My Heart'

It says something about how far the Backstreets' stock has fallen in
recent years that they resorted to doing a promotional interview with
Kate 'The Apprentice' Walsh for car-crash magazine show Live From Studio Five
earlier this week. Watching Brian, Nick, Howie and AJ deal with the
reality star's fits of giggles while approximately five hardcore fans
stood waving banners made a rather depressing sight.

Fortunately,
though the glitz and glamour may have faded somewhat, musically they
appear to be undergoing a renaissance. If this RedOne-produced single
is a fair representation, then their upcoming album may live up its
billing as the band's best since 1999's Millennium. Fans who
always preferred their banging pop tracks to the syrupy ballads will
certainly be satisfied with this throbbing anthem, which has a chorus
just begging for some old-school BSB dance moves.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Backstreet's Back To Save The Day With 'Straight Through My Heart'

One of the most successful boy bands in history, The Backstreet Boys, will be releasing their 7th studio album on October 6th. Still only having the remaining four members of the original five, the band has refused to let the loss of one member stop them from doing what they do best.

The record This Is Us will feature the band returning to Max Martin, part of the reason their 1999 album Millennium was such a success and is dubbed some of their best work since that album 10 years ago. The Backstreet Boys has also joined forces with some of today's best producers, including Martin, RedOne who is responsible for Lady Gaga's first two singles, and Ryan Tedder who produced Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love" and is the frontman for OneRepublic.

Opening with "Straight Through My Heart," the song produced by RedOne, The Backstreet Boys test a new water. Having a strong dance beat, "Straight Through My Heart" is an anthem of falling hard in love, bleeding open and unable to stop. The band may not be Lady Gaga, but the lead single is a departure from previous work and displays their ability to try and stay on top of current trends as they always have.

Produced by Max Martin, "Bigger" is a layered synth mid-tempo ballad infused with some more rhythmic beats that can easily make the listener tap their foot along. It sounds like Martin slapped a vocoder on the guys' voices as well as they sing about a dedicated love who doesn't leave through thick and thin. "Bigger" has the potential to be a big hit if remixed for clubs or even a radio remix. The production is quite mellow for mainstream radio but adding a few more drum hits would make the song much more epic and able to fit in.

However, "All of Your Love (You Need Love)" fulfills that notion more than perfectly. Slammed with some heavy synth leads and a pounding drum, The Backstreet Boys have indeed changed their sound on This Is Us without compromising their traditional R&B likeability. Having such production on the album is almost asking for the album to a bigger success for them as their previous record Unbreakable failed to take off.

A Backstreet Boys album would not be complete with their heartfelt ballads. "Shattered" is just that. "Inside I'm so lost, In the middle of my heart, It's a battlefield of love, I've been fighting far too long," the song plays out into a painful chorus of being broken with soaring vocal notes, displaying the band's maturity in their full grown voices since their beginnings back in 1995. The message and the vocal production of "Shattered" is hindered by a lacking backtrack that is just missing something to make it stand out. The mid-tempo ballad titled track "This Is Us" is another that is lacking something to make it pop compared to some of the album's first handful of songs.

It seems the word masquerade is becoming popular as Kelly Clarkson originally titled her latest effort by that name and Ashley Tisdale included a song of the same name on her latest album. "Masquerade" takes a while to build and it's A.J. McLean's voice that stands out most on his segment of the song. Dancing through the night, removing any masks, they're asking their love to stay with them and show them the true colors with no holding back.

One of the standout tracks comes at the very end. "Undone" consists of a haunting melody placed along a drum programming progression. While the relationship is burning out, feeling numb and not wanting to move on, the song insists they can fix things and be "undone."

This Is Us by The Backstreet Boys is a great effort filled with ups and downs, ballads and hot beats and if marketed properly by their Jive label, can be a hit for the everlasting band.

This Is Us is in stores October 6th.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: New Video... Interview In Dancing With The Stars

THE BACKSTREETBOYS & AARON CARTER: Brotherly Love

Brotherly Love: Aaron Carter had “the Boys” in his corner Monday night on Dancing with the Stars — as in his brother Nick and the rest of the Backstreet Boys. The group, whose new CD This Is Us comes Oct. 6, were on their feet after “little Aaron” performed the show’s first dance of the season, an admirable cha cha with partner Karina Smirnoff. Carrie Ann Inaba

remarked that Carter is “all grown up,” a sentiment the Boys shared
with PEOPLE after the show. “We’ve grown up with him and still he has
that spunk he had when he was six,” Howie Dorough
said. Nick, meanwhile, said his little brother “killed it! … I told him
that he needs to remember that it’s not how you start, but how you
finish.”
