All the upcoming TV appearances have been cancelled as they are no longer listed on thebackstreetboys.com. So that means The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show along with the Early show that was announced earlier are all cancelled. Possibly as well as the Hollywood CD Signing.
I’m sure they will try and make all this up and reschedule these. Check back for any updates when I have them.

BRIAN LITTRELL: ‘You Never Think It Will Hit You’
(We reported earlier that Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell had been diagnosed with H1N1,
commonly known as swine flu, upon arriving in New York just prior to
the release of the band’s new album. Littrell wanted to write something
about the experience. Here are his comments, in his own words.)

I knew something was way wrong on the plane ride home from Japan. I
mean, I was miserable, but I didn’t expect anything like this. You
always hear about this stuff but you never think it will hit you.

When we got to the hotel in NYC I knew I needed to see a doctor.
Then the doctor said I had all the symptoms. Swine flu? It all still
seemed so surreal. I mean – I got a record coming out, why me? Why this
week?

I couldn’t sleep. The body aches were tremendous.
This morning it reached a new level. It felt like I was hit by a
truck. I mean it took me awhile to even get out of the bed, or even
move at all. (CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta describes his own bout with H1N1 here.)

Then it really hit home when the doctor confirmed it was definitely
swine flu. He told me I had to be responsible and do my best to make
sure nobody gets it from me. You can feel that pressure. I was supposed
to see a lot of fans today at the signing.I’d have to tell the hotel
staff here to leave room service, towels, etc., at my door.

And tell my wife she couldn’t come see me for a few days.
It’s a very lonely feeling.
I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.
BRIAN LITTRELL: Discusses Having H1N1 Flu
Atlanta-based Backstreet Boy member Brian Littrell called into Q100’s The Bert Show Tuesday to discuss being diagnosed Sunday with the H1N1 virus.

the Backstreet Boys were due to fly to Los Angeles Tuesday to tape
appearances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”
Littrell said he was awaiting word from a doctor Tuesday on when he might be able to return to work.

“I

he was being quarantined in a New York hotel room away from the rest of
his bandmates.
“My business, unfortunately, doesn’t really allow for sick days,” he said.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Swine Flu Can't Keep Them Down
This morning, I met with 75 percent of the Backstreet Boys (Nick Carter, AJ McLean, and Howie Dorough) while their swine flu-stricken groupmate Brian Littrell rested in his hotel room.
http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/10/06/backstreet-boys-interview-swine-flu-cant-keep-them-down/
They were supposed to have performed on CBS’ The Early Show,
but instead they were gulping tea in their hotel lobby and praying they
don’t get sick as well. I asked them about their scrapped PR plans,
their new light-hearted outlook on their careers, and why they agreed
to be Auto-tuned on one track on their new record, This Is Us. Then I bathed in Purell.

Music Mix: How disappointed are you that you had to cancel your Early Show performance this morning?
AJ: Obviously we’re all bummed out, but there’s not
much we can do. We are trying to work around the situation, and at
least do the couch on Conan and Jimmy Kimmel. I know we’re not doing Ellen because she’s a little freaked out about the whole thing.

Howie: Germs.
AJ: It sucks. I feel really bad for Brian. The poor guy’s like a freakin’ leper in his room right now. He can’t leave.
Music Mix: You guys worked with several big
producers on this record: T-Pain, RedOne, Ryan Tedder. But you’ve also
faced resistance from songwriters and producers over the years, right?

Nick: It wasn’t easy. With all the backlash that
we’ve had, some people didn’t necessarily want to work with us at
first. I called up T-Pain, and I felt like I was just hassling him. I
don’t know if he was at a video shoot or something, but I’m like, “Hey,
is T-Pain there?” He’s like, “Who’s this?” I’m like, “It’s Nick Carter
from the Backstreet Boys.” “Hold on, he ain’t here right now. I’ll have
him call you back.” And it was him! I brought it up to him when we were
recording. I’m like, “Pain, dog, you remember when I f—in’ called you?”
He’s like, “Yeah, man, I’m sorry, I didn’t know what to say at the
time.”

R&B-tinged pop that made you huge in the late ’90s. Why did you
ever veer away from it in the first place?
R&B-tinged pop that made you huge in the late ’90s. Why did you
ever veer away from it in the first place?
Howie: I think it all stems back to back in the days to when we and *NSYNC were on the same label. You go back and listen to songs like “Shape of My Heart,”
those songs that went to that pop/adult-contemporary vein, they wanted
to separate the two styles of the groups, and they made *NYSNC more of
the R&B group, with the duet with Nelly.
We obviously went with the flow. We all knew in our hearts and our
souls that it wasn’t exactly the right direction for the type of group
that we are. We’re not a rock band.

Nick: When we first got together, what was it that influenced us? It was R&B music. We thought we were black.
AJ: Especially with the huge success of “Incomplete,”
people started trying to pigeonhole us in this whole AC [adult
contemporary] world. We’re not an AC act. You come to our live show,
it’s full of energy. We’re not just sitting on stools singing
“Incomplete,” “Inconsolable,” and “I Want It That Way.” But
unfortunately, the songs that got released put us in that whole
limelight. But now, with the first single off this record ["Straight Through My Heart"] being an up-tempo dance record, it’s opened doors again to a whole new look on us, hopefully.

Music Mix: I was looking at the Billboard Hot 100 today thinking, “Why isn’t ‘Straight Through My Heart’ anywhere on here?”
Howie: We’re wondering that too.
AJ: I think it’s more of a teaser, like knocking on
the door: “Hello? We’re still here. We’re not doing what everybody
thinks we always do. But now we’re going to smack you in the face with
[second single] ‘Bigger,’ and you’re going to go, ‘Oh, okay, now I get
it.’” We’ve already got an idea of what the third single can be:
“Undone” [co-written and co-produced by Ryan Tedder].

your popularity. I saw a clip of Brian running on an underwater treadmill from some show in Spain.

Nick: Okay, this is what’s great about the group now. Now, we’re freakin’ retards.
I mean that in the most fun way. Before, we were always so damn
serious. It’s just like, it’s freakin’ pop music, you know what I mean?
When you talk about TV shows where we’re acting stupid and just having
fun, it’s because we really never had a chance to do that. I personally
believe when you have that mentality, that’s when things start
happening. We’re more approachable. We’re having the time of our life
right now, and it’s showing in our music.

Nick: “Quit Playing Games (With My Heart)” for me.
AJ: To be honest with you, I would take out “The One.”
Howie: That’s the one I was gonna say!
AJ: And I know exactly which song it would be replaced with: “If I Knew Then.” I freakin’ love that damn song.
Nick: Why don’t we do that?
Music Mix: One last thing I’ve got to ask: As guys
who have always taken pride in the fact that you can actually sing, did
you have any hesitation about letting yourself be Auto-tuned on the
track that T-Pain produced, “She’s A Dream”? Isn’t Auto-tune for people who can’t sing?

Howie: That song is a unique song. The first verse
and chorus were already written. And there was a dilemma going on
between us and the record company because of the word “Shorty.”

Music Mix: Which you sing 11 times in the song. I counted.
AJ: That’s awesome.
Howie: And we’re a bunch of white kids, and it’s
not exactly the thing you normally hear from us. But that’s why we said
the Auto-tune works, because we want people to know this is a T-Pain
song. It’s his influence. It’s not us trying to write out “Shorty” and
be something else.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Album Drop: This Week’s New Releases

Every
once in a blue moon, a Tuesday will roll around when the album releases
are so good that you think about ditching work just so you can download
everything and give it all a good listen, with no spreadsheets or TPS
report to kill your buzz. Today, my friends, is one of those Tuesdays.
After the jump, check out the new offerings from Air, Gossip, Built To Spill, The Raveonettes and, yes, the Backstreet Boys.

Backstreet
Boys, This Is Us
It’s too bad the Backstreet Boys already put out that song
“Backstreet’s Back, Alright!” because that would have been the perfect
lead single for their comeback album. This one is actually ... a bit
better than you’d expect, thanks to tunes produced by folks like
T-Pain. Oh, and get better soon, Brian Litrell. Homedude’s got swine
flu.

AJ MCLEAN: We've Been Running For 17 Years Without Break
Many thinks that
the Backstreet Boys had finished many years ago. And now they make a
comeback. -Completely wrong, we have continued the whole time and never
made a break, "said AJ McLean, who is proud of the new album and the
fact, that group is on tour until 2011.
The four members of
the Backstreet Boys are sitting in a hotel room in Stockholm and are
very excited. AJ McLean with his gruff voice and Brian Littrell, who
seem to be fond of most things, love Sweden and in particular producer
and songwriter Max Martin, who stood behind so many of their hits.
They
are a bit surprised that someone thinks they have finished. On the
other hand, the Backstreet Boys are not as large today as in the late
1990s when they were on top with the album Millennium.
The two latest album generated no hits, which probably explains why people forget about boyband.
"But we did not break but toured all over the world," said Brian Littrell.
"We've been running for 17 years without break," added AJ McLean.
The
new plate has been named This Is Us, which in itself sounds as if the
band would like to point out that they actually exist.
"We
thought of calling the album Bigger, after a Max Martin song, but
guessed that it would be misinterpreted by the media, as we had
megalomania," said AJ McLean.
They are very positive to work
with Max Martin again, as in their "hits-years" when they spat out the
list climbers like Everybody (Backstreet's Back), I want it that way,
Larger Than Life and As Long As You Love Me.
"It's always the
same thing with Max, which is good. We worked with him in Los Angeles
and he had sent demos of songs where he sings. He has an amazing rock
voice, exclaims Brian Littrell.
Why is he so good at producing?
"He
has the magic formula that makes our voices blended perfectly. Many
other producers do not know how to get it sound that good. In addition,
we have a long history together since Stockholm was the first place we
recorded our music outside the U.S..
Backstreet Boys, who seem
to have a weakness for Swedish producers, using also Red One on the new
disc, who also has worked with Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga.
"It was cool. We needed a dance-pop song and as old fan, he knew exactly who had sung which part in all our previous songs.
How is it to be a Backstreet Boy today?
-Better
than a decade ago because we have a life now. Then we knew just how to
travel around the world and everything was crazy. We are adults and
have stopped picking on each other. Now we are like a fine wine. We are
happy with what we have achieved and I am married and have a son who
loves both us and Miley Cyrus, "said Brian Littrell.
He has
also recorded Christian discs and released the single In Christ Alone
2005 and solo album, Welcome home the following year. Right now he is
inside his studio to record a sequel. Although AJ McLean will release
his first solo album in 2010 with the title Have It All.
McLean
quickly became known as the Backstreet Boy with problems such as
alcoholism, cocaine, clinical depression and admission to rehab.
In the end, he spoke out in The Oprah Winfrey Show (2003)
"I
do not regret that I was so open. If I could help someone with my
history, I am happy. Many fans got in touch as well as celebrity
friends. Even the Backstreet Boys called.
"I called not, Brian Littrell smiles and then says that he just kidding.
Is there any more Swedish people you want to work with?
-Yes, the dream is that Bjorn and Benny to write a song for us.
Is it okay to still be called the Backstreet Boys?
-Yes, it's our brand and it's not worse than the guys from Beach Boys.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Neither Original Nor The Only One
Backstreet’s back and it’s not all right. The group is still in teeny-bopper form.
Despite
the gradual increase in the maturity level of both the lyrics and music
over their past few albums, the Backstreet Boys are back to their old
ways with the release of yet another teenage pop-based record: This is
Us, their seventh album.
And “this” is undeniably mostly
30-something-year-old men who refuse to leave their cheesy lyrics and
computer-altered music behind in exchange for a sound appropriate for
their age group.
The group, which formed in 1993, was one of the
most popular acts in the mid-to-late ’90s. No wonder they have sold
more than 100 million albums, given that catchy hit singles from that
era include “Quit Playing Games With My Heart,” “I Want It That Way”
and “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back).”
And even after its brief
hiatus from 2002 to 2004 and the loss of band member Kevin Richardson
in 2005, the band was still able to churn out successful songs such as
“Inconsolable” and “Something That I Already Know” from 2007’s
Unbreakable.
In addition to exhibiting the stronger voices of
the Backstreet Boys, these new tracks also revealed more adult-oriented
themes and lyrics, which are clearly lacking on their latest effort.
From
the very first track, “Straight Through My Heart,” the listeners are
made well aware that if an album filled with deeply meaningful songs is
what they desire, they will have to look elsewhere. Although the song
is radio friendly, much like the group’s pre-hiatus music, it features
empty words for the sole purpose of creating rhymes. Lyrics such as
“Thought I moved more than on/ Thought I could fool her charm/ I really
wanna go/ But I can’t leave her alone” sound pretty shallow.
However,
this single seems like a gem compared to the ridiculous tracks that
follow it. Lyrics range from slightly illogical in “Masquerade” (“One’s
a tiger/ One’s a lynx/ One’s a king that’s suffering/ Moving high,
moving low,”) to flat-out creepy in “PDA” (“Meet me at the club, the
restaurant, the grocery store, or the movies/ Kissing and touching with
my hand all over your booty”).
And not even the presence of the
popular hip-hop and R&B artist T-Pain can save the track“She’s a
Dream,” which annoyingly overuses the word “shorty.”
If this
album had been released 15 years ago in the wake of the boy-band
explosion, it probably would have been extremely successful. The
Backstreet Boys should revisit the quality styles they harbored on
2005’s Never Gone and 2007’s Unbreakable in order to have any success
comparable to the amount they experienced in their prime.

Despite
the gradual increase in the maturity level of both the lyrics and music
over their past few albums, the Backstreet Boys are back to their old
ways with the release of yet another teenage pop-based record: This is
Us, their seventh album.
