THE BACKSTREETBOYS: 2009 StarShine Magazine Music Award Nominees

2009 StarShine Magazine Music Award Nominees Include Big Stars Katy Perry, Lady Gaga & Jesse McCartney
Staten Island, NY—October 7, 2009—Now known as the StarShine Music
Awards (abbreviated SMAs), the 7th annual online voting will take place
on www.StarShineMag.com beginning October 19, 2009 (12am EST) and
ending on November 16th (11:59pm EST).

This year’s nominees proves to be StarShine Magazine’s most diverse
group of artists to date—combining multi-platinum superstars with
rising buzz-worthy artists as well as relatively underground musicians.
StarShine Magazine’s nominees were chosen by president & editor,
Sandy Lo along with assistant editor, Sa’iyda Shabazz. Sticking to
their policy of not nominating an artist that hasn’t been featured in
the magazine, Sandy Lo is grateful they’ve been fortunate enough to
interview and help discover big stars like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry as
well as spotlight breaking artists like Van Atta High and Livvi Franc.

“Our readers are stubborn and loyal enough to want to see the
Backstreet Boys and Jesse McCartney every year, but open-minded enough
to welcome new talent, even ones that step into obscurity like 100
Monkeys or like Shytown, who blends an interesting mix of sounds.”

Katy Perry receives top nods in 7 categories including Best Live
Show for her “Hello Katy” tour and Best Pop Song for “Hot N Cold”. She
goes head to head with Lady Gaga for Album of the Year, Artist of the
Year, Favorite Female, Best New Artist and Song of the Year. Gaga is
also up for Best Dance Song for “Just Dance” and competes in that
category up against Cascada’s “Evacuate The Dance Floor”, Jesse
McCartney’s newest hit “Body Language”, newcomer Livvi Franc’s “Now I’m
That Chick” and rising boy band V Factory with “Love Struck”.

Jesse McCartney is also up for Favorite Male, Song of the Year for
“How Do You Sleep?”, Album of the Year and Artist of the Year. Other
Disney derived nominees include Demi Lovato with 4 nominations and
Ashley Tisdale with 2.

Other artists nominated include the critically acclaimed and fan
favorite Michael Buble, VH1 You Oughta Know artist, Eric Hutchinson, up
& coming singer/songwriter Josh Hoge, and new female artist Jessie
James with a whopping 5 nominees for her self-titled debut.

Instructions to vote will be available through

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Backstreet's Back, Alright

IF YOU ever get the chance to meet the Backstreet Boys in person, do not blow it by asking them when they’re planning to change the group’s name to Backstreet Men. That is one question they really don’t want to hear again.

Fortunately, I escaped their annoyance because my first interview question to them was, “Which questions are you sick of already and don’t want me to ask?” Besides the one above, the other question the boys wanted me to refrain from was, “How is this album different compared to the previous ones?”

Good thing I asked that first question, then. The band was in Singapore recently for the listening party of their latest album, This Is Us.

As I walked into the room, I could hear Brian Littrell and Nick Carter singing away (Howie Dorough and Alexander ‘AJ’ McLean were being interviewed in a separate room).

And so I asked, “Do you guys have to sing everything out?”, to which Brian replied with a long and high-pitched “Yessssss.”

The Backstreet Boys were in Singapore recently for the listening party of their latest album This Is Us.

Considered the talkative ones in the quartet, Brian and Nick seemed a little tired and worn-out during the interview, most probably because they were still jet-lagged from their long plane ride. The boys had earlier Tweeted, “About to take off. Singapore here we come. We’ve got a 14 hour flight to Hong Kong first. Oh man ... this is going to be a long night!!!”, from their official Twitter account.

Nevertheless, they were still game for a short chat and spoke about everything – from Michael Jackson’s death to how Nick doesn’t want to ever get married to how AJ is the “conflicting” one in the group.

They also shared the reason why, despite having lots of money in their bank accounts, adoring fan and monumnetal fame around the world, they are still slogging it out in the studios to release a new album.

“This is fun. You know, we make music because we’re passionate about making music. We get to travel the world and see all our fans,” said Brian.

For their latest album, the Backstreet Boys worked with new producers and artists such as T-Pain and Pitbull, and they’re excited with the new sound that they brought to their songs.

“It’s exciting to get into the studio with the new producers and things were just falling into place. It didn’t seem like we were hitting any kind of wall and it just flowed because it was the right thing to do.” The duo was also looking forward to sharing their album with their fans.

“When we play it for our frigging family and friends, they are like ‘Nyeh’ and ‘Whatever’, but when a fan or a critic hears the songs and likes it and you hear their feedback, that’s the exciting part,” said Nick.

Brian added that if there ever is a day that they don’t find it all fun any more, they’ll definitely quit the music industry. Don’t worry folks, that day is nowhere in sight for the moment.

“As of right now, it is still a lot of fun to go through the highs and the lows of the business. Besides, we’ve been doing this for a long time, so it’s pretty much all we know,” he added.

When the band first started out in the music business, they had competition from other singers their age like N*Sync, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. These days, though, the industry is filled with the Miley Cyruses, Jonas Brothers, Taylor Swifts who are yet to reach their twenties.

However, the Backstreet Boys don’t see these young teeny-boppers as competition, and they mean it in a nice way.

“Not to say that we’re in a league of our own, but we’re in a different time-frame of music. We’ve always stuck to what we do. There are outside forces who tell us we have to be that or do that, but we stay clear from that.

“We started in the music business when we were still making vinyl records. Then it went to cassettes, then it went to CDs and now it’s over the Internet. The music business has changed tremendously since we started and all we can do is do is just keep doing what we do,” said Brian.

After more than 16 years in the music industry, they are also aware of the changes in expectations. They acknowledge the fact that now, the industry and fans are more interested in an artiste’s personal life than their talent.

“There’s nothing we can do about it. We just have to be who we are and do what we do. It’s unfortunate that people (I’m not trying to compare ourselves to Michael Jackson) dogged Mike until the day he died,” said Nick.

He went on to say that after the legendary performer’s death, people in the industry and fans were like, “Oh, we love Mike again,” when in fact that some of them didn’t even want him in the country.

At this point, Nick took up an empty cup that was by his side, and used a marker to draw a ‘frowny’ face on it, to emote his feelings about the whole situation.

“Sometimes, you just don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. That’s just human nature. But we can’t pay attention to that, cause we’d probably go insane. So, we just have to live and love in the moment,” added Nick.

Brian shared that the hospital where Michael’s body was taken to was right down the street from his home in Los Angeles, California.

“I was in disbelief when I first heard the news. I didn’t think it was true and I turned on the news and saw all the helicopters around the hospital. It was crazy,” he said.

Nick, like many other Michael fans, was in shock and couldn’t comprehend the sudden loss of a superstar.

“Mike named one of his album Invincible and he gave the perception, which I believed that and I think the world believed, that he couldn’t be destroyed. But when something like that happens, it hits you and you go ‘Wait a minute, we are humans, flesh and blood, and it can all go away. Whenever God wants to take you away’,” he said.

The boys quickly snapped out of the sombre topic and discussed about all the good things that have happened to them during the time they’ve been together.

One of it, Nick said was that he’s a better dancer now compared to when he first started. Nevertheless, he doesn’t want to compete with his brother when it comes to that department seeing that Aaron is doing so well in Dancing With The Stars competition.

“I don’t wanna try to beat my brother. He’s in his own category and he’s doing what he does. I’m a singer first and always have been.”

Brian, on the other hand, believes that after all these years, they’ve gotten better as being a team.

“There was a time when we were headed in different direction but now, the one thing that keeps us together now is that we’re seeing the same thing. I think that we’re better at sticking together and having each other’s backs,” he said.

THE BACKSTREETBOYS: Backstreet Boys - Those Old Boys {Vanity Fair (Italy)}

In the 90's, singing and dancing, they sent crowds of teenagers into ecstacy. Now the music's changed. They've grown up, they've broken up and then they've come back together, one oe them has left the group, other two have built a family. Just like their fans, who go to their concerts with their kids.

"Did you like the new album? Would you buy it if we were a new band?" On the terrace of a bar in Zurich, Backstreet Boys lounch themselves in an extempore market survey.
Its not difficoult to understand why. Since when the reformed, in 2005, the couldnt repeat the success they had in the 90's, the gold age of boy bands, those groups of singers-dancers, young and good looking who were there for a teenage audience. In particular, their latest album, Unbreakable, out in 2007, had a response under the expectations, with only 150,000 copies sold worldwide. Now the group, formed by Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell an Alexander James McLean, without Kevin Richardson, have another effort with this is us, out in Italy a few days ago. Brian Littrell says:"The title says it all: this is us. It's a come back to our origins".

they still call you backstreet boys, but you're not boys anymore. You've grown up and two of you, Brian an Howie, had a son
Aj: i dont. But i have two dogs.
B: luckily he hasnt got any children.
Aj: why? Maybe i'll have them before I'll be 40. But now Im single.
N: Alex, dont lie!
and you Brian? Does your son know that his dad is a Backstreet Boy?
B: yes. He always tells his classmates, and they say:"back what?". I have to tell him to stop.

what would you say to your son if he wanted to enter in a boy band?
B: I'd suggest him to be a solo artist. No, I'm joking. Actually, he has alredy told me he'd like to sing, but it's too early. If his intentions are serious, I'll give him my support.

Nick, you seem to be allergic to family
N: For the moment I dont feel the need to have one. I'll think about it in five years.

your relationship with Paris Hilton, few days ago, had a big echo. Now we dont know anything about you. Do you have a girlfriend?
N: at the moment Im dating a girl. She's really different from Paris Hilton, she's an ordinary girl. I cant tell you who she is, i can only tell you I dont believe in marriage. I believe in being together.
B: the truth is that he doesnt believe in the partition of the properties.

lets talk about music. Now kids prefer tokio hotel and jonas brothers
Aj: but those are real band, they play instruments. They dont dance, they are another thing. We focus on singing and dancing. We can play, but we dont do that: its not part of our way to create a show.

but at your age, do you still dance? Havent you get tired of it yet?
Aj: of course we still dance, you will see what we are going to do during our tour.
B: dancing makes us feel young again and keeps us in shape. You need to be ok to go on stage.

in the past there were photos where you seemed to have put on some weight. You let yourself go.
B: yeah, but now we feel great.

how do you make yourself fit?
B: see, one day in our life is really animated. We wake up early, some of us go to gym, others dont. Then we have 8 - 10 hours of rehearsals. At night we go back home really tired. Its a really hard job to be a backstreet boy.

are you serious?
B: A lot of people think our life is all about fun and dream journeys, but its not like that. In this job you need commitment and constancy.

besides you, take that and new kids on the block are back. How do you explain yourself this boybands revival?
Aj: simple: history repeating. Its like fashion.
N: boybands have always made great fun pop music. Now, with the crisis, people just want to smile, to distract themselves off their problems listening to good music. And in fact we, take that and nkotb have still the largest number of fans, compared to all the other boyband of all time.

I guess Kevin's departure has disoriented your fans
N: we were worried, but at the end our audience still wanted to listen to us sing.

who is your audience now?
N: we see a little of everything during our concerts. Old, young, teenagers, families with kids. A lot of fans have grown up with us and our music.
B:its strange. We were in Berlin recently signing autographs and we understood there were a lot of boys there.

do you have a lot of gay fans?
Probably, but we dont know it for sure. The fans in Berlin werent all gay, for sure.

unbreakable, your previous record, didnt do too well.
B: for unbreakable we wanted a pop dance sound, but at the concerts there was a band playing live. The experiment hasnt worked. Now we worked with the best producers in the world and its been easier to create what we wanted.
Aj: we've repossessed our identity of band that expresses itself live:we are performers first of all. Unbreakable was a deviation.

is that all? It was just the sound that didnt work?
B: the media havent covered the release of the album. We've been unfortunate. When our first single came out, in the US the authors of the tv shows were on strike so our promo went up in smoke. It was also during the holidays and it was the end of the year. It wasnt a great moment.

people used to say that Sony wanted to dismiss you.
N:no,we've never risked to be dismissed.

no tensions?
B: they were skeptical. But you have to keep in mind that at that time the Sony was having a lot of renovations. They were deciding the strategy of the investment and, since its difficult to sell records nowadays, make a decision, for a record company, is really tricky.

what do you think about the music crisis, having sold 80millions copies?
N:when we started, there wasnt the illegal download. We can say that nowadays is easier to sell tickets for the concert: you cant download live experiences.
Aj: i think that in a few years record companies will become an obsolete system and they'll be repleaced by one big compaign. This is the direction. Its enough to see all the latest fusions there have been between record companies. But as long as we are able to not care about how many records we sell, we can concentrate about doing our job and tours the best way we can.

do record companies only bet on known artists?
B:well, lets be honest: bsb is a mark that in some countries, like in Japan for example, means certain sales. For our record company we are a guarantee.
